Rome Total War (PC)
Review by Erik Clemons

Rome: Total War is the third and best installment of the Total War series. This game greatly improves upon its predecessors. You can play as one of three Roman families, Julii, Brutii, and the Scipii. In the beginning, you can only choose as one of the three families, but once you start, you can unlock other teams after winning the game. You develop your cities and towns by building other structures and fulfilling requirements costing money. Everything is extremely detailed from the strategic map to the epic battles.

When you starting playing Rome, you notice that with the strategic map, you are able to manage your cities. Missions assigned by the senate will allow you to earn money and popularity. If you fail to please the senate, you will lose popularity and power with the senate and your subjects. When the senate is pleased with your actions through the mission, you are granted gifts and earn fame with the Roman people. Your leaders and subjects can gain abilities and fame by winning battles. The map is divided into many areas, where you can improve trade and movement by building roads. For each province, there is one town or city. These provinces have trade items such as gold, silver, and other resources which are shown on the map.

The best part of the game is the combat system. As opposed to other games, Rome has two options, quick resolution, and detailed battles. The quick system will tell you immediately who won and give you an account of all the soldiers that died on each side. The battle system however is completely contrasts the quick system. For the battle system, you are transported to a detailed three dimensional field that shows both armies. In the battle system, you can close in and look over your army in any direction. You are able to set certain formations, deploy units, and carry out elaborate attacks. The soldierslisten to your general before the battle which includes information such as tactical and strategic advice. When the battle begins, you can see the soldiers shoot arrows, form a phalanx or testudo, or throw javelins, depending on each unit. Your cavalry can ride down the opposing army and drive through any infantry force.

The sound portion is outstanding. The voices are really detailed. The factions have their own movies, voices, and music. The movies are done really well. The movies are done really well. The interface is really clean and easy to use. The game includes a tutorial campaign and includes advisors whom you ask advice from. Explanations of each unit, building, leader and ship are included.

This game is excellent. The multi player is detailed. The visuals are amazing. The battles are cinematic. The game is truly one of the best battle themed games of all time. If you like the Roman history, battles, and wonderful music, that involves building an empire, running a city, and creating an army, Rome is a game for you.
