God of War (PS2)
Review by Raj Sodhi

God of War is a game that doesn’t come around often. It takes place in a tale of vengeance against the gods in Greek mythology. It turns into an epic adventure genre and is focused on combat and puzzle solving techniques. It mixes these qualities as important parts of the game and accomplishes this very well. In more simple terms, this is one of the best action adventure games on the PS2, and everyone should check it out!

God of War’s storyline is heavily revolved around Kratos. Kratos is a Spartan warrior, who at the beginning of the game, is on the brink of suicide. He believes that the gods have abandoned him and throws himself at the tallest mountain in Greece, gunning for a quick death. When the story begins, we find him in the middle of the Aegean Sea fighting his way through warriors and a large hydra. As the game unfolds, you learn more about Kratos, and that he is a someone who is deeply tortured and a warrior who wants to wash away his sins and his past.

The main part of the game begins with Kratos carrying out a mission from the gods of Mount Olympus to stop the fugitive god Ares from destroying Athens. The only way a mortal like Kratos can destroy a god is to attain the mysterious Pandoras box. It is a weapon so powerful that even the gods fear its power. By the time the game is finished, you’ll know nearly all there is to know about Kratos. It will leave you pretty sympathetic about our messed up warrior. Even though the story is basic, it stays full of emotion and action especially when you reach the final conflict.

In a fight, Kratos is a very capable warrior. This is so because of his weaponry, a pair of axe like blades named the “blades of chaos.” These blades are actually charred into Kratos’ flesh. As the game passes, you earn new combos as you collect and spend orbs. All the combos, even the most powerful, are rarely difficult to do. It is a satisfying and fun point of the game especially since it’s able to play itself out. Even if you are only going between attacks, each hit feels great a looks wonderful. The blades aren’t your only weapon. As you go though the game, you encounter many gods, who are extremely helpful against the quest to kill Ares. Zeus gives Kraots the power of lightning. Hades lets you unleash the souls to the underworld. All these weapons and magic types can be upgraded with the red orbs. Each of the different types of magic is useful in its own way. The combination of different magic, as well as the weapons combat makes a variety of attacks that turn Kratos into a serious force, not to be messed around with.

What this game does best of all, is create an extremely dark and fun atmosphere. The game is heavily influenced by the gods and Greek mythology. All the creatures that are encountered are the kind of monsters you are to expect, each having its own style, adding to the overall game. The graphics are extremely well done and the artistic touches greatly help the game. The puzzles get into this aspect as well, by adding to the dark theme. This is a great game if you can handle the dark theme and humor exciting.
