Final Fantasy X (PC) It's been nearly a decade since the very first release of Final Fantasy, predicted to be the last product from SquareSoft, now called SquareEnix, after successive failures. No one certainly expected that the ironically titled Final Fantasy would come this far and sell more than 5 million copies per release worldwide. Final Fantasy X is the first of the series to be played on Playstation 2, manipulating the DVD playable power, SquareEnix has elaborately incorporated real character voices in both computer graphics and regular game play. Although it might have seemed extremely risky, Final Fantasy was first to really reveal emotional drama and love that seemed to be dormant yet present in the previous Final Fantasy games. Tidus, young and famous blitzball player in the city of Zanarkand, plays the main character on a journey to destroy the source of all of his pain, including one caused by his own fater, Jecht, who supposedly abandoned Tidus when he was only a child. Five other characters join him, one by one on the early part of the game. Of the many themes underlying this magnificent story,k the love that grows between Tidus and another female character, Yuna, is one that really interconnects all the others together. As far as the game play, this role playing game is turn based. For those who become nervous or "choke" when it comes to fighting fearful bosses, there is no need to worry about that in this game. As long as it is your turn, the enemy can not attack or in fact, do anything. During a battle, only three characters are allowed on the fighting scene but are interchangeable with other characters not fighting. This way everyone during the battl eis able to get the required experience. This speeds the rate of leveling up which enhances the rewarding experience of actually fighting refular monsters other than major bosses. On the topic of levels, Final Fantasy uses a gigantic grid rather than linear levels. Instead of having regular number levels and receiving the alloted statistics that come with the level, you get to make your own attributes. There is a grid, elaborated map, of different attributes and just like in a board game, an equivalent to a level would be a space foward or one on a dice. wherever you land on, you will gain that attribute specific to that space on the grid. It is very confusing at first but with time you will enjoy this sytem with more freedom so much more. There is a minigmae called blitzball which you can come back to anytime during the game. it gives a whole new enjoyment to the game and obsession to the game. It followed the idea after the moderate success with card minigames introduced in Final Fantasy 8 and 9. The only difference in Final Fantasy 10 is that it's so much more fun and SquareEnix managed to blend this in with the main stream story. The most obvious part of this megahit is the music. Nobou Uematsu has been the composer of the series since the very beginning and always managed to pull off a grand audience. "Isn't it wonderful" is played during a love scene in a lake with Tidus and Yuna and has been hailed by many of his fans including myself. Not only that but the famous blitzball introduction and the ending title is just phenomenal. It would not be an exaggeration to say that his music salvaged the series from falling apart completely. Most definitely it was a huge part of Final Fantasy X's success. |
