Burnout 3: Takedown (PS2) How many times have you been playing a "Racing Simulator" game such as Gran Turismo, wishing you could smash up your opponants, only to have them gently bump into the wall without so much as a scratch? Burnout 3 solves that problem by allowing, even encouraging wanton destruction of your opponents, and the environment. As you race, you can gain boosts by knocking other racers into walls, or into traffic. This might make the game sound to be shallow - just wreck your oppenents to win. Suprisingly enough, Burnout 3 is one of the deepest racing games out there.
One of the most appealing aspects of Burnout 3 is the large number of different gametypes. Among these are Road Rage in which you try and wreck other racers without being wrecked yourself, Crash Mode in which your goal is to create the largest wrecks possible, Burning Lap which is a time trial mode, and others. Road Rage and Crash are the most notable. You can play all of the modes in multiplayer, and the game even has online support for those of you with a network adapter. It's a blast to play with friends, or even with random strangers online. There's also a wealth of extras to unlock including extra cars, extra tracks, and the like.
The AI is considerably well done as well, if not a bit easy to win against. No matter how big of a lead they may have on you, it's almost always possible to catch up, provided you have opponents near you to provide boost, and don't wreck too often. My largest dislikes about the game were the inability to change your controller layout (I find that the R/L buttons work best for racing games in my opinion), and the fact that it's occasionally hard to see where you're going at 200 MPH due to the motion blur. Aside from that, this is a very excellent game, which is a must for anyone with a PS2 and friends. Should said friends not be available, there are still enough courses and extras to unlock that the game won't get boring for quite some time. |
